OXYGEN MODALITIES
NASAL CANNULA
- It is used for
- Prevention and treatment of Hypoxia and Hypoxemia
- Can also be used to decrease work of breathing due to hypoxemia or hypoxia and to decrease myocardial work
- Flows to use
- 0.03-2L/min
- Limited to a maximum of 2 L/min to avoid the possibility of creating inadvertent CPAP
- Anything over 2L/min will need a doctors order
- To humidify the Nasal Cannula
- FiO2
- Generally 24-40%, but the Fio2 is variable based on the patients inspiratory flow/minute ventilation
SIMPLE MASK
- It is used for
- Prevention and treatment of Hypoxia and Hypoxemia
- Can also be used to decrease work of breathing due to hypoxemia or hypoxia and to decrease myocardial work
- Flows
- 5-10 L/min
- There should be at least 5 L/min to flush out and prevent rebreathing of CO2
- Humidity
- Typically nothing is used for humidty
- Bubble Humidifier can be used on 5 L/min if MD prefers
- FiO2
- Generally 40 – 60 %, but the Fio2 is variable based on the patient’s inspiratory flow/minute ventilation and mask fit.
VENTURI MASK
- It is used for
- Prevention and treatment of Hypoxia and Hypoxemia
- Can also be used to decrease work of breathing due to hypoxemia or hypoxia and to decrease myocardial work
- It works by entraining room air when pure oxygen is delivered through a small orifice, resulting in a large total flow at predictable Fio2
- We generally do not humidify
- Flows
- Flows used will be based on what FiO2 is desired
- FiO2
NON-REBREATHER (NRB) MASK
- It is used for
- Prevention and treatment of Hypoxia and Hypoxemia
- Can also be used to decrease work of breathing due to hypoxemia or hypoxia and to decrease myocardial work
- Flows
- Minimum of 10 L/min, but increase flow to keep reservoir bag 1/3- ½ filled during inspiration
- Nothing is done to humidify
- Fio2
- Generally 60-100 %, but the Fio2 is variable based on the patient’s inspiratory flow/minute ventilation and mask fit
HEATED MIST TRACH COLLAR
- It is used for
- Humidification and can deliver oxygen
- Flows
- Dependent on desired FIO2
- Fio2
- If you are on an oxygen flowmeter dial the desired FiO2 in using the venture style valve
- If on a room air flowmeter, the FiO2 is 21% regardless of what is set with the venture valve, adjust based on needed humidification
HIGH FLOW TRACH ADAPTOR
- It is used for
- Humidification and can deliver oxygen
- Flows
- 0-10kg = 15 LPM
- 10.1 kg -15kg = 20 LPM
- 15.1-25kg = 30lpm LPM
- Greater than 25kg = 40 LPM
- FiO2
- Dial in the Fio2 with the blender
