Respiratory Therapists, on all units, are responsible for the cleaning/maintenance of Respiratory Care equipment.
Key Points:
- All reusable equipment will be cleaned and wiped with a low level disinfectant after patient use and then stored properly, i.e.:
- Ventilators
- HFNC
- Vest machines
- Cough assists
- Blenders/heaters
- Servo-I expiratory filters are wiped down followed by running warm water through the cassette for 2 minutes. Next, they are shaken 5-8 times to get the water out and placed in the drying setup with air flowing through.
- Wipe down temp probes with disinfectant wipes and allow to air dry. Place in a clean bag, then in the bin labeled for temp probes.
- All INO injector modules and drain cups, Draegar expiratory filters, and reusable IPV/VDR parts will be taken to the Sterile Processing Department for cleaning/sterilization with the following procedure:
- Place all dirty equipment in the red biohazard container in the 2nd floor RT clean room
- RT (does not have to be the charge) will deliver to the dirty room in SPD on the 1st floor
- The white and yellow clinic tag should be filled out (Department, # of temp probes, injector modules, etc) and attached to red biohazard container
- The container is then placed inside the dirty SPD room next to sink
- Fill out the Clinic Drop Off Form and place in the file folder located on the clean side of SPD
- Retrieve a clean red biohazard container from the clean room in SPD to take back to the 2nd floor RT room
- If there is clean equipment to be picked up then take the corresponding “Clinic Drop Off Form” from the file folder on your way out
