The goal is to improve mucocilliary clearance, increase volume of sputum expectorated, and to improve airway function
Deliver CPT to all available lung regions for 3-5 min unless specified by the physician
Caution should be used to prevent regurgitation and aspiration if the patient is receiving continuous feeding
Indications
Indicated as an adjunct in any patient whose cough alone (voluntary or induced) cannot provide adequate lung clearance
Particularly in patients with:
Voluminous secretions
Thick tenacious secretions
Patients with neuromuscular disorders
Contraindications:
Discomfort due to physical positions or manipulations
Anticoagulation
Rib fractures
Vertebral fractures or osteoporosis
Recent hemoptysis
Trendelenberg positioning will not be done without a physician’s order and is contraindicated for NICU

Postural drainage removes mucus from certain parts of your lungs by using gravity. By placing the patient in different positions, mucus drains to the bigger airways where it can be coughed out
